Unit Converter (Metric to Imperial and Back)

Our free unit converter turns metric to imperial and back in one tap, with no sign-up. Pick a type of unit, enter a number, and you’ll see the answer straight away, plus a table showing the same value in every other unit of that type. It covers the units people in the UK and US use every day: miles and kilometres, pounds, stone and kilograms, degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit, litres and gallons, and more.

What this unit converter can convert

The tool has six categories, and each one includes both metric and imperial or US units:

  • Length: millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards and miles.
  • Weight: milligrams, grams, kilograms, tonnes, ounces, pounds and stone.
  • Temperature: Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin.
  • Volume: millilitres, litres, US teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, pints and gallons, plus UK fluid ounces, pints and gallons.
  • Area: square centimetres, square metres, hectares, square kilometres, square inches, square feet, square yards, acres and square miles.
  • Speed: metres per second, kilometres per hour, miles per hour, knots and feet per second.

How to use the unit converter

  1. Choose the type of unit (for example, Weight).
  2. Type your value in the box.
  3. Select the unit you’re converting from and the unit you want to.
  4. Read the result. It updates as you type.
  5. Press the swap button to flip the units and convert the other way.

When you convert to stone, the tool also shows the answer in stones and pounds, the way people in the UK usually say their weight.

Three worked examples

Here You can better Understand with Examples.

Example 1: Body weight, stone to kilograms

A UK doctor’s form asks for your weight in kilograms, but you know it as 10 stone 7 pounds. One stone is 14 pounds, so 10 stone 7 pounds is 147 pounds. One pound is 0.45359237 kg, so:

147 lb × 0.45359237 = 66.68 kg

Enter 147 in the tool, convert from pounds to kilograms, and you’ll get the same answer.

Example 2: Distance, miles to kilometres

You’re training for a marathon, and your running app shows kilometres. A marathon is about 26.2 miles. One mile is exactly 1.609344 km, so:

26.2 mi × 1.609344 = 42.16 km

The official marathon distance is 42.195 km, because the exact distance is 26 miles 385 yards, which rounds to 26.2 miles.

Example 3: Cooking, Celsius to Fahrenheit

A UK recipe says to bake at 180 °C, but your US oven only shows Fahrenheit. The formula is °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, so:

180 × 9/5 + 32 = 356 °F

Most US ovens would be set to 350 °F, which is close enough for baking.

1 foot30.48 cm
1 mile1.609 km
1 ounce28.35 g
1 pound0.4536 kg

1 US gallon3.785 litres
1 UK gallon4.546 litres

US and UK units are not always the same

Some units share a name but have different sizes. The gallon is the best-known case: a US gallon is about 3.785 litres, but a UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 litres, roughly 20% larger. A UK pint is 20 fluid ounces, while a US pint is 16. That’s why our volume list shows US and UK units separately, so you always pick the right one.

Tips for accurate conversions

  • Check the unit variant for volume, especially when following a recipe from another country.
  • Don’t round too early. Convert first and round at the end, particularly for multi-step calculations.
  • Use exact factors for important work such as engineering, medicine or shipping. This tool uses the official definitions (for example 1 inch = 2.54 cm).
  • For temperature, remember it isn’t a simple multiplication. It needs the +32 or −32 offset, which is why the tool handles it separately.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert metric to imperial? Select the metric unit in “From”, the imperial unit in “To”, and enter your value. For example, 1 kilometre equals about 0.62 miles, and 1 kilogram equals about 2.2 pounds.

How many pounds are in a stone? There are 14 pounds in one stone. To convert stone to pounds, multiply by 14, then add any extra pounds.
